Violet Evergarden was the first to win and reap in its category at the Kyoto Animation Awards, so it piqued the audience’s interest. The jury was allegedly so moved by the story that they experienced a tsunami of emotional avalanches they had never experienced before. The story was superbly written.
It outlined a plot in which a former child soldier, Violet, faces her war crimes while learning to feel through the personal stories of others by depicting the smallest detail of the environment. The following are some of our suggestions for fantastic anime that take place in both reality and fantasy worlds but are similar to Violet Evergarden.
Your Name (Kimi no Na wa)
This anime’s plot revolves around love and miracles, and it stars two high school students named Mitsuha and Taki. Mitsuha’s family lives in a small mountain village and runs the local shrine, but the girl yearns for a life in the big city.
Taki attends school in central Tokyo and aspires to be an architect. They both have a dream one night that they are living the other’s life, and despite the fact that they have never met, they begin looking for each other while dealing with the challenges of their environment, such as school and personal life, but most importantly with their own problem: neither of them is passionate about the other, but they gradually begin to take an interest in the other.
On the days of body swap, they leave messages for each other and try to positively interfere in the other’s life. The viewer is hooked when a dramatic turn makes it impossible for the two to meet in person. Then there’s the sense of danger, hopelessness, and darkness, which creeps in unabated among the characters.
The film’s greatest strength is its genuine charm, the mystical investigation, the concern for the characters, and their spiritual growth.
A Silent Voice (Koe no Katachi)
Both of these stories have a serious tone to them. This is the series to watch if you’re looking for something sincere and a little sad. Each anime is the work of Kyoto Animation Studio, which is well known for its great stories, deep characters, and amazing animation.
Ishida Shouya is an incurable troublemaker and a true leader at school, where a new student, the deaf little girl Nishimiya Shouko, arrives. Our hero has been disliked by the girl trying to communicate through her notebook since the beginning, which is exacerbated by the fact that Shouko’s disability places a significant burden on the entire class.
Soon, the abuses and humiliations aimed at Shouko come together, and of course, Ishida is the driving force behind the abuse, until he feels what it’s like to be excluded in his own skin. Ishida isolates himself from the outside world because it’s the only way he’ll be able to finish school. Years later, there is still a dark spot in his past that he is unable to forget.
A Silent Voice is more than just a brilliantly constructed drama; it is also a work that reaches deep into the heart. Not only because of the main plot but also because of the numerous side stories it deals with.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride
A moving story about forgiveness and letting go of the past.
Hatori Chise was willing to give up everything because she had never felt free, so she decided she would be happier as a slave, where others would decide her fate. She is now determined to sign a contract that will allow her to be sold to the highest bidder, as she is unconcerned about what will happen to her in the future.
Elias Ainsworth also shows up at the auction and offers a ridiculous sum in exchange for the girl, so there’s no doubt he’ll be able to take her home. He has other plans for Chise, however; he does not want to keep her as a slave, but rather to raise her as his disciple.
This anime, like Violet Evergarden, features a strong female lead who grows from a lost girl to a strong woman. The romantic aspect is present in both cases, as are challenging scenarios that are kept close to reality despite the fact that they are set in a fantasy world.
Your Lie in April
Your Lie in April, like Violet Evergarden, is a heartwarming and very sad anime story that is worth watching or bingeing. This is a story about giving up everything for the sake of eternal love and acceptance.
Following the death of his mother, a young pianist finds himself unable to hear the sound of the piano. But everything changes when he meets his life’s love, a violinist. They begin performing together until a series of unfortunate events culminates in a tragic ending.
Kosei Arima, like Violet, the main character of this anime, is a child without parental love who is learning how to live a life after a major change. And both stories will have you sobbing on the floor, which is reason enough not to miss it.
Plastic Memories is a story about forbidden love between a human and an android (Giftia): Tsukasa Mizugaki, a human boy, falls in love with Isla, a Giftia. The main issue is that Tsukasa’s job is to erase Isla’s memory after she has lived for nine years and four months.
This is one of the most heartbreaking anime series available, telling the story of a forbidden relationship and love that develops over time. That is why, if you enjoy love, romance, and pure emotion, it should be on every serious list of anime to watch.
Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee
Letter Bees deliver mail to the general populace in Amberground, the land of eternal twilight. However, unlike other mail services, they must contend with giant insects known as Gaichuu, which make travel a living nightmare.
Lag Seeing, a boy who lost his mother under mysterious circumstances, is taking the Letter Bee exam in order to figure out what happened and reunite with Gauche, his childhood friend who saved him. Each anime shares the idea that letters are extremely important and have a high emotional value for those who write, deliver, and receive them.
Emma – A Victorian Romance
A woman named Emma works as a maid for a retired governess at the end of the nineteenth century, when social classes dominate society. A man named William pays a visit to the governess and falls in love with the young Emma. In a time when there is great prejudice for love between different social classes, Emma and William must overcome obstacles in order to be together.
Each anime has a master-servant relationship that the main character is attempting to grow out of, as well as great love stories. The amazing details of the costumes are also likely to be the main resemblance between Emma and Violet Evergarden. They both have a Victorian – Edwardian aesthetic.
Kazuya transfers to a prestigious academy in the early twentieth century as part of an exchange program between Japan and a small European country called Sauber. One day, Kazuya wanders around the library and comes across a botanical garden, where he meets Victorique, a small blonde-haired girl with a complex and imaginative foresight that allows her to solve even the most difficult and dangerous mysteries.
They begin to take on various mystery cases, which they solve using their specialized skills. Each anime has the same European aesthetic and vibe, and both take place during a war. They both have a great story with great art, and both female characters must deal with their emotions.
What happens after death? Is it paradise or hell? Actually, the only thing that stands between reincarnation and an endless abyss is a bar. In Quindecim’s world, lives are judged by an arbiter named Decim, who appears to be a bartender but actually challenges humans to games to determine whether they are worthy of moving on or perish.
Stunning details with scenes that will definitely keep you entertained. Apart from the visuals, Decim and Violet have a lot in common because they are both very professional in everything they do and try to empathize with humans properly. This anime is more horror and fantasy-focused, but it will definitely live up to your expectations.
Kyoukai no Kanata (Beyond the Boundary)
Mirai Kuriyama is the sole survivor of a clan that can manifest her blood into weapons in a world where supernatural beings exist and are hunted by Spirit Warriors. She is tasked with tracking down and eliminating these creatures, which are said to be spawned by negative human emotions. One day, while deep in thought on the school roof, she runs into Akihito, one of her classmates who is a rare half-breed and whom she can’t stop stabbing in the chest.
As she learns that he is immortal, he assists her in gaining confidence and bringing down the evil beings. This is a supernatural slice-of-life story with beautiful emotional and action scenes. Excellent animation in the vein of Violet Evergarden.
Houtarou Oreki is a high school student who prefers to conserve energy and dislikes having to do a lot of work. He meets Chitanda, an ever-curious girl who loves to challenge his easy-going existence to satisfy her curiosity after his sister convinces him to join the Literary Club. The group, along with Satoshi and Ibara, investigates cases ranging from a self-locking classroom door to the shadowy history of the club to which they belong.
Another stunning piece of work from Kyoto Animation, this time with a fantastic atmosphere and appealing animation. The fluid movements and high quality of each scene in this school life drama mystery are truly remarkable.
Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka?
That’s a long title, and you might recognize it from the translation as WorldEnd: What do you do when the world comes to an end? Are you preoccupied? Will you come to our aid? Willem Kumesh is a former warrior who fought against powerful beasts that posed a threat to humanity. He awakens 500 years later when humanity has become extinct and the species that have survived have left the ground to live on a floating island called Regal Ele.
He eventually meets a group of young girls who appear to be the only Leprechauns capable of fighting the dangerous beasts. The plots are very different, but they both take place in military and war environments where people are treated more like weapons than actual people. A very emotional and dramatic storyline that will undoubtedly make you cry like a baby. Both stories, I repeat, will make you cry a lot.
