In Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills as his daughter’s life is threatened. The film adapts the general idea from the planned television show, pairing Axel with his kid. However, unlike the TV series focusing on a son, the movie shifts to featuring Axel and his daughter.

Beverly Hills Cop 4 plotline

Since the late 90s, there had been circulating plans for a fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie. It is officially announced in 2006 with original producer Jerry Bruckheimer onboard. However, Bruckheimer passed the reins to Lorenzo di Bonaventura, initiating the drawn-out journey of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F becoming a reality.

By 2011, the film was shelved in favor of a television spin-off focusing on Axel’s son, but just before airing, Paramount decided to give the movie another try. In 2013, Bruckheimer returned as producer, announcing Murphy reprising Axel Foley with Ratner directing. However, development troubles persisted as Ratner dropped out, casting the film’s future into uncertainty.

In 2019, after much back-and-forth, Paramount officially teamed up with Netflix for the fourth movie while retaining rights for the first three installments. Mark Molly took over as the director after the movie changed hands multiple times during its long development cycle.

Filming development, which began in the late summer of 2022, faced difficulties. After a prolonged wait for Murphy to agree to a suitable script, the creators had another hurdle: impressing the city of Beverly Hills itself. Officials, initially wary, noted changes in the town’s atmosphere since the 80s and had concerns about the portrayal of the Beverly Hills police force despite the city’s star-studded reputation.
