Yes, Lootere is based on a true story and shows us how Somali pirates hijacked the Indian MV A1 Kausar ship in 2017. On March 29, 2017, the MV Al Kausar, an Indian ship, was hijacked in the Somali seas. Somali pirates hijacked the Indian cargo ship in the Gulf of Aden on its way from Dubai to Bosasso, a port town in northeastern Somalia. 

The pirates seized possession of the ship and imprisoned 11 Indian crewmen. There were six Keralites, two from Tamil Nadu, along with one each from Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. The hijackers demanded payment to free the ship and her crew. The Indian Navy soon launched warships to hunt down the seized ship.
