She learned Law and lives in Italy now. In 2022, the book sold the most copies in Italy. It became super popular on BookTok, a part of TikTok, and people started comparing it to Elena Ferrante’s work. However, there are certain differences between the original novel and its movie adaptation.

In the film, Nica tells her side against Margaret, but things happen in a different order than in the book. In the book, Nica spends months with Rigel, who is in a coma, trying to wake him up by telling him stories. The novel is long and around 550 pages! About halfway through, Nica and Rigel finally start dating after a lot of tension.

But in the movie, which is only an hour and 45 minutes, their relationship moves faster. Rigel often gets headaches and bad fevers. Early in the book, he faints from a fever, and Nica has to care for him while their parents are away. This scene is in the movie too but it is also when Nica and Rigel first get together physically. In the book, Rigel is asleep, and Nica just sees how vulnerable he is for the first time.

The Tearsmith Book Plot

A famous story talks about the Tearsmith: a man with glass-like eyes who makes all the fears in people’s hearts. Nica and Rigel, two orphans, must confront him and his creations. Nica, raised in Grave’s Orphanage, loves stories, especially the one about the Tearsmith.

At seventeen, the Mulligans adopt her, and she thinks she is leaving her scary tales behind. But they also adopt Rigel, a troubled orphan. Nica falls for him despite their shared sad past. However, Nica’s old fears threaten their happiness. Can Nica face her fears, leave her past, and love Rigel?

The Tearsmith Plot

Years ago, Nica’s parents died in a car crash. She went to a strict orphanage called Sunnycreek, known as the Grave. There, she heard many stories, including one about the Tearsmith. In this tale, people lived without feelings and could not cry. They sought the Tearsmith’s tears, but it unleashed their darkest emotions and ruined the world.

Nica felt she would be part of this story one day. At 17, Nica’s dream of getting adopted came true. The Milligans were kind parents and took her in. But Miss Margaret, the headmistress, warned that it was a trial. If Nica misbehaved, she could lose her new family.

Nica’s happiness was tested when the Milligans also adopted her old rival, Rigel. Miss Margaret once favoured Rigel, but he had been cruel to Nica. Living with him again crushed her hopes. Yet, as they faced their pasts together, a special love grew between them.
