The series, which was created in collaboration with the Universal Television Alternative Studio, 222 Productions, Live Animals Productions, and Dave Stewart, seeks to give unrecognized songwriters the opportunity to write a hit single. It allows the audience to see the artistic process at work. Entrants are hired to work with production companies and a record producer to start releasing a song. The program aims to raise the songwriter’s traditional role in the music-making cycle from “uncomfortable mystery” to an appreciated “magic element.” Songland was created by Stewart, a musician, and songwriter who previously worked with the Eurythmics.
