Netflix released The Railway Men on 18 November 2023. It has four episodes of about 51-65 minutes, documenting how Ghulam Dastgir saved the lives of thousands during the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy that shook India. Fans want to know: Where is Ghulam Dastgir now?

On the night of 2 December 1984, Bhopal faced one of the most terrifying situations. There was a chemical leak from the E610 storage tank at the Union Carbide India Limited plant. The dangerous and deadly methyl isocyanate gas immediately affected the nearby residents.

Newspaper clippings claim the death toll was over 16,000 while the authorities recorded only 3787. At least 558,125 people faced non-fatal injuries and long-term illnesses. So, where is Ghulam Dastgir now after jumping in the night of the fateful disaster?

Where Is Ghulam Dastgir Now?

Ghulam Dastgir was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1996, and sadly, he died in January 2023. His long-term illness was a result of his direct exposure to the poisonous methyl isocyanate gas in 1984. He suffered from ulcers, present all the way from his throat to his colon, and has visual problems. The Bhopal Memorial Hospital also ruled his death due to his exposure to the methyl isocyanate gas.

Shadab Dastgir and Nayab Dastgir, Ghulam’s sons, confirmed this in recent interviews. Mr. Dastgir was working in his office till 1 AM and was unaware of the chaos outside. When he finally came out, he was shocked to see dead bodies lying everywhere. Ghulam Dastgir went to platform number 1 to check on the status of the incoming Gorakhpur-Bombay Express.

He alerted all nearby stations and tried his best to stop the incoming train. Mr. Dastgir knew if the Express entered Bhopal Junction, the death toll would rise drastically. He did not want innocent people to be a casualty of the Union Carbide tragedy. Unfortunately, the Gorakhpur-Bombay Express had crossed the Sukhi Sewaniya Station, and no one could stop it now.

Ghulam Dastgir commanded his officers to let the train pass by without stopping, but they wanted him to follow the proper protocols. If Mr. Dastgir had done that, we would be seeing a rise in the death count. When other residents of Bhopal started pouring into Bhopal Junction to catch a train from the city, Ghulam Dastgir stayed behind to help everyone. He did not escape via the cargo train like several others.

Ghulam Dastgir’s Son v The Railway Men

Ghulam Dastgir’s son Shadab Dastgir was offended because Yash Raj Films did not give due credit to his father. They claimed The Railway Men was inspired by true events, but the stationmaster was Iftekaar Siddiqui and not Ghulam Dastgir. In 2019, Shadab and his brother Nayab signed a contract with a production house, Small Box Films.

They would make a movie, Ghulam, about their late father and his brave attempts to rescue the people of Bhopal. However, in 2021, Yash Raj Films released the teaser trailer of The Railway Men, and it offended the brothers. They claimed several film directors and production houses were talking to them about making a movie on their father.

Their question was why Yash Raj Films did not consult them before creating the show. When they sent a legal notice to the creators, they responded by saying a teaser trailer cannot determine the content of the series.

On 9 November 2023, Small Box Films sent a legal notice to Yash Raj Films claiming to have Mr. Ghulam Dastgir’s life story rights. On 12 November, Yash Raj Films responded by saying The Railway Men is an adaptation of the various public accounts of the 1984 tragedy. They claimed it was not a biography.
