Is Caught Out Based On A True Story?

Caught Out is based on a true story about the Indian Cricket Team and its alliances with international players for match-fixing. We see the scandals involving Hansie Cronje, Sanjeev Chawla, Kapil Dev, Mohammad Azharuddin, M. K. Gupta, Manoj Prabhakar, and others at the beginning of the 2000s.

The documentary shows us how some of our favorite cricketers were involved in various cases of match-fixing for monetary benefits. It also shows us how others and certain CBI and BCCI officers took charge of bringing the racket down. These incidents shook the Indian cricket community and especially its fans.

One of the highlights was the scandal between Sanjeev Chawla and the late Hansie Cronje. In 2000, Delhi Police intercepted a phone call between bookie Chawla and late African cricketer Cronje. They found out the latter had received money from bookies in exchange for losing international cricket matches.

When other cricketers started testifying against Cronje, Chawla fled to the United Kingdom. Delhi Police got him back in 2020, but the court granted him bail. Hansie Cronje died in 2002 because of a plane crash. This scandal paved the way for Mohammad Azharuddin, former Indian cricket team captain, and the infamous Kapil Dev.

Caught Out Plot

Former cricket player and coach Manoj Prabhakar teamed up with one of the founders of Tehelka, Minty Telpaj. Prabhakar explicitly stated that Kapil Dev tried bribing him. Unfortunately, Kapil Dev was the Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002, and Tehelka magazine received backlash. The CBI started its investigation, and Mr. Dev was exonerated.

Sadly, former Indian cricket team captain Mohammad Azharuddin did not share the same fate. Late Hansie Cronje testified it was Azharuddin who introduced him to the bookies. The Central Bureau of Investigation submitted a report to the International Cricket Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India. They banned him from cricket for life.

Caught Out explores the above scandals and their repercussions on the cricket community and its fans. The documentary is dark and full of threats and match-fixing. The creators have also shown us several real-life footage from the time of these incidents. Even though 1h 17m is insufficient to show everything in detail, the makers tried their best.
