The book follows a literary agent who investigates the murder of a psychologist. The author tells the story from multiple perspectives and layers. It explores themes like memory, perception, and the complexities of the human mind, but it is a work of fiction.

Sleeping Dogs Plot

Roy Freeman is a man with advanced Alzheimer’s undergoing an experimental treatment to repair damage from the disease. Roy cannot remember anything about his life or daily tasks. He uses notes around his home to remind him of his name and how to use simple things like a toaster.

This situation becomes tricky when a man named Isaac Samuel, who is on death row and scheduled to be executed in a month, claims he is innocent of the murder he was convicted of. Isaac contacts Roy and his former police partner, Jimmy, through a non-profit organization. Only Roy responds, and after speaking with Isaac in prison, he believes Isaac might be innocent.

Roy’s memory loss plays a key role in the story as he revisits the case, files, and photos at home with fresh eyes. He finds that there are people with stronger motives to have killed a professor named Joseph Wieder than Isaac, who is set to die for the crime.

The story proceeds with Roy gathering clues and suspects, with a significant portion of the backstory coming from the written memories of a dead man named Richard. After his father’s death, Richard nearly left college due to financial troubles but was saved by Wieder’s generosity. Richard and Wieder were connected through Laura Baines, a brilliant student assistant to the professor. Before Wieder’s murder, he and Laura were researching memory.

The Book Of Mirrors Plot

Peter Katz, a literary agent in New York, gets a manuscript from Richard Flynn. Flynn was an English Literature student at Princeton in the late 1980s and wanted to be a writer. The manuscript tells about Flynn’s love affair with Laura Baines, a psychology student. Flynn thinks Laura was secretly involved with a famous professor, Joseph Wieder.

Someone murders Professor Wieder, but the police never catch the killer. Flynn’s manuscript ends at the moment of the crime. The second part is from John Keller’s perspective. Keller is a freelance reporter trying to understand the circumstances of the murder for a true crime book. He stops his project due to possible legal problems.

In the third part, Roy Freeman, the police detective who worked on the Wieder case, starts his investigation. He is now a reclusive man with early Alzheimer’s. After speaking to John Keller, he receives important information about the case from Frank Spoel, a convict awaiting execution in Missouri.
