Who Was Sam Bahadur?
Sam Manekshaw was born as Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw. His parents were Hormizd Manekshaw and Hilla, née Mehta from Amritsar, Punjab. Sam has five siblings named Fali, Sheru, Jami, Cilla, and Jan. He was the fifth kid and the third son of the Manekshaws.
The family had a military background, with their father serving as a captain in the Army Medical Corps for the British Indian Army during World War Two. Sam Manekshaw graduated from the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, which he joined in 1932. He started his military career by joining the 4th Battalion, 12th Frontier Force Regiment.
After the Independence of India, the military promoted him to the post of brigadier at the Military Operations Directorate and then as a general officer for the 26th Infantry Division. In the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971, Sam Manekshaw and his forces played a crucial part in our victory. The Government of India awarded him with the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan.
In 1973, V. V. Giri, the then President of India, conferred the rank of Field Marshall to Sam Manekshaw, making him the first Indian to achieve it. On 22 April 1939, he married Siloo Bode in Mumbai, and they had two daughters named Sherry and Maya.
Unfortunately, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw passed away on 27 June 2008 after suffering from pneumonia complications. He now rests alongside his wife in the Parsi cemetery in Ooty, Tamil Nadu.
