The J.A. Boyena film “Society of the Snow” recounts the gripping true story of the 1972 Andes plane crash, portraying the valiant struggle for survival by sixteen passengers over an arduous 72 days in the frigid Andes Mountain Range. Who are the Andes Survivors and Where are they Today? Spain’s official submission for Best International Feature at the 2024 Academy Awards, the film features a cast of entirely South American actors, many making their debut.

Released on Netflix on January 4, 2024, “Society of the Snow” has swiftly gained popularity as one of the streaming platform’s most-watched films.

Who are the Andes Survivors and Where are they Today?

The Uruguayan flight targeted Chile for a warmer destination, where Roberto Canessa and Nando Parrado miraculously hiked to safety. Freezing temperatures and avalanches took the lives of several initial crash survivors.

 Among the original 45 passengers and crew, 19 were from Uruguay’s Old Christian’s rugby team, with others being friends, family, and supporters. In total, 16 passengers survived the ordeal, with all but two still alive today. MailOnline elaborates on each survivor’s subsequent endeavors.

Adolfo “Fito” Strauch:

Esteban Kukuriczka portrayed Adolfo “Fito” Strauch in Society of the Snow. Fito went on to work in agriculture and became a father of four children. He has been featured in documentaries Independent Lens, Alive: 20 Years Later, and Stranded: The Andes Plane Crash Survivors.

Daniel Fernández:

Francisco Romero played Daniel Fernández in Society of the Snow. Daniel, who remained silent for 30 years, eventually became a public speaker and a professor of agriculture.

Roberto “Bobby” François:

Agustín Berruti portrayed Roberto “Bobby” François. Bobby chose a private life and refrained from writing books or participating in documentaries, rarely speaking publicly about the tragic events.

Carlitos Páez:

In Society of the Snow, Carlitos Páez is portrayed by his real-life son, Calritos Paez. Carlitos, the son of the famous Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró, pursued a successful career in advertising, eventually founding his own agency, Rating Publicidad.

Javier Methol:

Esteban Bigliardi portrayed Javier Methol. Sadly, Javier passed away in 2015 from cancer. After losing his wife Liliana during the events following the plane crash, he remarried Ana María and had four children, working in the tobacco industry.

Ramón “Moncho” Sabella:

Rocco Posca played Ramón “Moncho” Sabella. Moncho became a businessman, living in Asunción, Paraguay. He also became a public speaker, notably addressing the survivors of the 2010 Copiapó mining accident in Chile.

José “Coche” Luis Inciarte:

Simon Hempe played José “Coche” Luis Inciarte. Sadly, Coche passed away in 2023 at the age of 75 due to cancer and severe bone problems. Before his death, he got married, had three children, and several grandchildren, becoming a prominent figure in the milk industry.

Roy Harley:

Andy Pruss portrayed Roy Harley. Roy married at the age of 28 in 1978, studying civil engineering while having a young daughter. He appeared in documentaries Alive: 20 Years Later (1993), Stranded (2007), and Independent Lens (2009).

Alfredo “Pancho” Delgado:

Valentino Alonso portrayed Alfredo “Pancho” Delgado. Pancho became a public and motivational speaker, discussing the religious aspects of the cannibalism during the ordeal. He lived a quiet life but participated in events commemorating the 40th anniversary of the disaster.

Pedro Algorta:

Luciano Chatton portrayed Pedro Algorta. Currently 72 years old, Pedro moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina, continued his studies, and graduated with a master’s degree in business administration from Stanford University in 1982. He authored the book Into the Mountains.

Antonio “Tintin” Vizintín:

Agustín Della Corte portrayed Antonio “Tintin” Vizintín. Tintin celebrated his 70th birthday in 2023, studying law, working in the packaging and food industry, and becoming the Vice President of the Uruguayan Rugby Union, among other roles.

Fernando Parrado:

Agustín Padrella portrayed Fernando Parrado. Now 74, Fernando co-wrote the book Miracle in the Andes and pursued a career as a TV presenter, entrepreneur, and motivational speaker, appearing in various documentaries.

Álvaro Mangino:

Juan Caruso portrayed Álvaro Mangino. Álvaro contributed to the book Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors, got married, worked in air conditioning and heating, and is now a grandfather living in Montevideo.

Eduardo Strauch:

Rafael Federman portrayed Eduardo Strauch. An architect and painter, Eduardo co-authored the book Out of the Silence: After the Crash in 2019 and is married to Laura Braga with five children.

Gustavo Zerbino:

Tomás Wolf portrayed Gustavo Zerbino. Gustavo became the Director and CEO of the Uruguayan Rugby Federation and the President of the Proprietary Formulations Chamber. He is also a motivational speaker.

Roberto Canessa:

Matías Recalt portrayed Roberto Canessa. Roberto became a pediatric cardiologist and a motivational speaker, offering aid to fellow survivors during the ordeal. He later taught at the University of the Republic graduate school and ran for Uruguayan President in 1994.
