Bhumi Pednekar will essay the role of Vaishali Singh. A young journalist who risks her life and decides to expose the reality. A shelter home run by politicians and the cases of sexual abuse that took place inside the government-funded rescue house. The story of Bhakshak is based on the incidents that took place in a shelter home in Muzaffarpur, Bihar where several women were sexually abused. The case refers to a horrendous incident of sexual abuse and exploitation that took place in a government-funded shelter home in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. The case came to the limelight in 2018. A report by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) to the Bihar Social Welfare Department. The report has details of allegations of sexual abuse of minor girls at the shelter home which was run by a non-governmental organisation (NGO) called Seva Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti.
The true story behind the case will form a crucial part of Bhumi Pednekar’s Netflix movie Bhakshak. The TISS report revealed astonishing details of sexual exploitation, physical abuse, and torture inflicted upon the inmates. Most of the victims were girls aged between 7 and 17. The victims were allegedly subjected to systematic abuse over an extended period. The people accused of being involved in the case were the shelter home staff. The director of the shelter home, Brajesh Thakur, was also a local politician with significant influence in the area.

Nivedita Jha, a journalist and now a poet, serve as the real-life inspiration for Vaishali Singh. It portrays by Bhumi Pednekar in the recent OTT release ‘Bhakshak.’ Journalism, for Nivedita, revolves around amplifying the voices that need to be heard, mirroring the role portrayed by Vaishali in the film.
Hailing from Patna, Bihar, Nivedita initially worked at Navbharat Times before venturing into independent journalism. In 2018, following the revelation in a TATA Institute of Social Sciences report regarding potential physical and sexual abuse of minors in shelter homes in Bihar, Nivedita filed a PIL against these establishments in Muzaffarnagar. Her relentless pursuit of truth led to the plea reaching the Patna High Court in July 2018, despite facing obstacles such as a ban on coverage of the Muzaffarnagar case.
Since then, Nivedita has assumed significant roles, including serving as the Bihar Working Journalist Union president, acting as the Bihar President of the National Forum for Indian Women, and presiding over the Bihar Chapter of South Asian Women In Media. Her journey has been marked by advocacy for justice and empowerment.
Muzaffarpur Balika Greh rape case
The TISS report exposed astonishing details of sexual exploitation, physical abuse, and torture inflicted on inmates, mostly girls aged 7-17, by the shelter home staff and director Brajesh Thakur, a local politician.
The Bihar Police launched an investigation after receiving the extensive first information report, arresting 12 individuals, including Thakur and shelter home employees. Notably, Thakur was previously booked in another case involving 11 missing women from another shelter home run by his NGO.
The case sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across the country, prompting discussions on child protection and shelter home safety. The Bihar government responded to the situation, but in the Netflix movie “Bhakshak,” it shows that it took time for the government to gather enough evidence. Finally, on May 29, the government relocated the girls to other safe facilities. Two days later, on May 31, an FIR was filed against 11 accused individuals in the case.
Conviction of Brajesh Thakur
Brajesh Thakur, a former Bihar People’s Party (BPP) MLA and founder of the Seva Sankalp Evam Vikas Samiti NGO. It is running a shelter home where 34 girls, aged between 7 and 17, were raped and assaulted for months. They were administered sleeping pills and subjected to inhumane assaults. Thakur was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault under the POCSO Act as well as gang rape.
Brajesh Thakur and 11 others who worked with him and were involved in this scandal. It is sentenced to life imprisonment for physically and sexually assaulting several minor girls.
Fortunately, according to reports, the perpetrator, Brajesh Thakur, is serving a life sentence following his conviction by a Delhi court in 2020.
